Romania's presidency said a proposal to acquire 24 used F-16 fighters will be sent to Parliament. Romania's Supreme Defense Council approved a plan late Tuesday to replace the existing MIG 21 Lancer planes with secondhand F-16s. No details were given about the cost of the planes or the cost of modernizing them. It was not immediately clear when Parliament will vote on the plan. Military sources quoted by news agency NewsIn said the planes will be acquired through an intergovernmental contract. The sources said the U.S. government is willing to give the fighters for free, while Romania will invest in upgrading them, training the pilots and modernizing the flight strips. |
